New Delhi / Amaravati, NFAPost: In a landmark development, the Government of India has passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after detailed deliberations, that will formally grant statutory recognition to Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The Bill is now scheduled to be taken up for discussion and passage in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, marking the final legislative step toward establishing Amaravati as the sole capital of the State.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said the passage of the bill in the Lok Sabha marks truly historic and deeply emotional moment for his state.
“With the passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha, recognising #Amaravati as our sole Praja Rajadhani, the collective aspirations of millions have found expression on the floor of the nation’s Parliament,” said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu via his social media handele.
On behalf of people of Andhra Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Union NDA Government led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji for making this moment possible and for taking this decisive step towards securing our capital.

It was truly heartening to witness unity across party lines in support of Andhra Pradesh and in recognition of the sacrifices made by our farmers. I sincerely hope that the Bill will receive similar support in the Rajya Sabha,” said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
During the Lok Sabha proceedings, leaders representing the TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh strongly advocated for the Bill. Notably, Union Minister of State Rural Development and Communication Chandrashekar Pemmasani, TDP MP Appalanaidu, BJP MP C M Ramesh, BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari and JSP MP Vallabhaneni Balashowry spoke in support of Amaravati as the capital.
Union Minister of State Rural Development and Communication Chandrashekar Pemmasani lauded the Narendra Modi Led government and hardwaork of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for successfully passing the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha and the day will be etched in his soul forever.
“Standing in the Lok Sabha today, I could feel the weight of 1,631 days of sacrifice… the silent tears, the unbreakable resolve, and the extraordinary courage of our farmers who never gave up on Amaravati. As a son of this sacred soil, speaking on behalf of the people of Amaravati was not just an honour — it was deeply personal. Expressing happiness over the development as a major win for the people of the state, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh said he watched the entire discussion in Parliament on the Amaravati Legitimacy Bill on TV.
“It stirred up anticipation. As an Andhraite, my heart swelled with pride when members described Amaravati’s history, culture, and necessity. The Central Government and various parties across the country standing in support matched the aspirations of five crore Andhra people. On the floor of the Lok Sabha, Amaravati’s greatness was once again introduced to the entire nation,” said Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh.
Criticising the YSRCP members walking out without participating in the discussion on the Amaravati Legitimacy Bill, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh said it created history in Parliament—the temple of democracy in the national capital Delhi—and it is a testament to their traitorous mindset.
“No matter how many births Jagan takes, he won’t lay a single brick in Amaravati. He can’t halt Andhra Pradesh’s development either. My state, Andhra Pradesh, is eternal; my capital, Amaravati, is imperishable,” said Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh.
YSR Congress Party Member of Parliament (MP) from Rajempet Peddireddy Midhun Reddy opposed the Bill on behalf of the YSR Congress Party, following which YSRCP MPs staged a walkout from Parliament.
Beyond the NDA alliance, several other parties extended their support to the Bill, including the Indian National Congress (INC), Samajwadi Party (SP), Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) – reflecting broad political consensus across party lines in favor of Amaravati.
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh will be present in New Delhi today to witness the Rajya Sabha proceedings. During his visit, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, C P Radhakrishnan, to convey the gratitude of the people of Andhra Pradesh.
The proposed amendment to Section 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 replaces the earlier provision of “a new capital” with “Amaravati shall be the new capital,” thereby embedding Amaravati firmly within the statutory framework.
This legislative move follows the unanimous resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 28, 2026, enabling the Bill’s introduction in Parliament.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh views this development as a defining milestone in the State’s post-2014 journey, one that restores institutional clarity, strengthens governance, and paves the way for Amaravati to emerge as India’s youngest world-class greenfield capital city.
Commenting on the outcome of the capital city issue, K Pandu Ranga Rao, a resident of Vijayawada, said he is happy that Amaravati is selected as the capital, as the place has the potential to be transformed into a green field city.
“It will be a great journey for the state under the leadership of Chandrababu Naidu. The Amaravati capital city project is led by the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA). As part of the larger land acquisition activities under the Land Pooling inititaitve the government might require a land parcel of around 20,000 acres,” said K Pandu Ranga Rao.
Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P Narayana on Tuesday appealed to the small group of farmers in Amaravati to part with their lands under the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS). The government has put April 9th as the deadline for farmers to voluntarily surrender the remaining land required for the Seed Access Road project in Amaravati.
“The construction of 4,026 residential units for legislators, IAS officers and government employees of Group I, Group II and Group D categories are nearing completion. Finishing works, such as fixing cupboards and doors, are underway, and the houses are expected to be handed over by the end of next month,” said Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P Narayana.
