Arjun Maini, son of industrialist Gautham Maini and driver of Mercedes-AMG Getspeed, created history by becoming the first Indian to stand on a DTM podium in second place.
The achievement is made possible by becoming second pit position after an intense drive through the streets that make the circuit of Norisring. The circuit of Nourishing was unique on the 2021 DTM Calender.
The race, with its street nature and low grip track, makes it one one of the most unique circuits where motor sport aficionados assemble to enjoy pace of the laps.
Expressing happiness over becoming first Indian to stand on a DTM podium in second place, Arjun Maini expressed his thanks to all Indian fans for their overwhelming support.
“Thank you all for your great support and big thanks to Mercedes-AMG Motor Sport and Getspeed for the amazing car,” said Arjun Maini.
With his focused approach, Arjun Maini started the race from P4 on the grid after showing pace in both the practice sessions and was able to keep himself out of much danger throughout the race.
Even though he faced intense pressure from championship leader Liam Lawson, but Arjun Maini managed to keep the Ferrari driver behind with some impressive racecraft and matured driving.
In lap 24, Philip Ellis, running in P3, tried to look for a gap through Liam Lawson in P2. But Philips Ellis only managed to spin his car while trying to nail the overtake.
With that, Arjun Maini moved to P3 and was now in contention for a podium finish. He was further helped by his team when he came into the pits in lap 26 to complete his mandatory pitstop.
His team managed a sub-seven second pit-stop and that allowed him to get out ahead of Liam Lawson. This put Arjun Maini in a potential P2 position.
“It is an honour to be the first ever Indian driver in the history of DTM and I am looking forward to this big opportunity in my career. This is the weapon for India,” said Arjun Maini.
The final race of the season will take place on 11th October where Arjun Maini will participate will have 20kg of success ballast on board which is a regulation dictated by DTM.
Arjun Maini now stands P13 on the grid with 40 points and is just one point away from Esteban Muth ahead with 41 points.
Last week, Arjun Maini had shown phenomenal pace at the Hockenheim race circuit in Germany, though an uncharacteristic error ultimately compromised his weekend. Maini had one of his most productive weekends at the penultimate round of the 2021 DTM Championship with the Mercedes man firmly establishing himself at the front of the field.
Before the racing season, Arjun Maini had stated that he is very happy to state his participation in DTM this season as a Mercedes AMG Driver with team Getspeed2.
