Russian Spacesuits Enhance Safety Measures for India’s Pioneering Human Spaceflight
Bengaluru, NFAPost: In a significant development for India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is contemplating a collaborative effort with Russia for the provision of spacesuits. While initially, locally produced Intra-Vehicular Activity (IVA) suits by Vikram Sarabhai Space were in the plan, recent indications suggest a preference for Russian spacesuits due to programmatic needs and an added layer of assurance for crew safety.
The Gaganyaan mission, slated for 2024, is a pivotal moment for ISRO as it aims to demonstrate India’s capability to conduct its first human spaceflight program. To safely return a crew of three people to Earth after a three-day stay in orbit at 400 kilometres, meticulous planning and execution are paramount.
ISRO’s Chairman, S Somanath, has designated 2024 as ‘The Year of Gaganyaan,’ emphasizing the importance of the mission in the space agency’s timeline. As ISRO gears up for this historic endeavour, critical tests and demonstrations are scheduled throughout the year to ensure the success of the human mission.
The decision to potentially opt for Russian spacesuits aligns with ISRO’s commitment to programmatic requirements and an added layer of safety for the crew. The Sokol spacesuit, a stalwart in Russian space missions since 1973, is being evaluated for its reliability in providing life support in emergencies. Designed for intra-vehicular activities, the Sokol spacesuit ensures the wearer’s survival in the event of unexpected spaceship depressurization, a critical feature for crew safety.
