In a significant event that will commemorate India’s transfer of power from the British to Indian hands, the historic “Sengol” will be installed at the new Parliament House. Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will receive this sacred symbol of fair and equitable governance and place it within the premises, symbolizing the dawn of a new era for India on the global stage.
The “Sengol” holds immense historical significance as it was first accepted by India’s first Prime Minister, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, on the night of August 14, 1947. The transfer of power from the British to Indians was marked by this symbolic handover of the “Sengol” at Nehru’s residence, witnessed by several leaders of the time.
Home Minister Shri Amit Shah highlighted the importance of this event, expressing his belief that many people in India are unaware of this historic moment even after 75 years of independence. He explained that the “Sengol” was received by Nehru from the Adheenams (Priests) of the Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam (Mutt) in Tamil Nadu, who had specially arrived for the occasion. This act symbolized the formal power transfer from the British to the Indian people.
The decision to adopt the “Sengol” as a national symbol of the Amrit Kaal (the era of nectar) was taken by the Honorable Prime Minister himself. The upcoming installation ceremony in the new Parliament House will mirror the original event, with Adheenams repeating the ritual and presenting the “Sengol” to the Prime Minister once again.
The “Sengol” derives its profound meaning from the Tamil word “Semmai,” signifying “Righteousness.” Blessed by the high priests of a prominent Dharmic Mutt in Tamil Nadu, it features a hand-carved Nandi, representing “Nyaya” (Justice), at the top. The recipient of the “Sengol” is entrusted with the “order” (“Aanai” in Tamil) to govern justly and fairly—a reminder that those elected to serve the people must uphold this principle.
The same “Sengol” from 1947 will be prominently displayed in the Lok Sabha, near the Speaker’s podium, allowing the nation to witness and appreciate its historical significance during special occasions.
Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized that the Parliament House is the most fitting and sacred location for the installation of the historic “Sengol,” which will serve as a timeless symbol of the promise, hope, and endless possibilities that India envisions for its future. It signifies the Amrit Kaal, an era in which India will rightfully claim its place of strength and prosperity.
The Tamil Nadu government has proudly recognized the role played by the Mutts of the state in the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) Policy Note of 2021-22. The involvement of the Mutts as Royal Counsel is highlighted in paragraph 24 of this document.
The preparations for this historic event have been carried out in consultation with the presidents of Adheenam. All 20 Adheenam presidents will grace the occasion with their presence, imparting their blessings to commemorate this sacred ritual. The participation of Shri Wummidi Bangaru Chettyji, a 96-year-old associated with the construction of the Parliament House, is particularly significant, and his presence is greatly appreciated.
To enable the people of India to learn about and appreciate this historic event, the Home Minister launched a dedicated website (sengol1947.ignca.gov.in). The website provides detailed information and downloadable videos related
