Mumbai, NFAPost: One of India’s largest software company HCL Technologies has reportedly laid off hundreds of employees. As per a report from Moneycontrol, the Indian software company has fired employees who were primarily working on its client Microsoft’s news-related products. The report stated that sources close to the events revealed that the decision to cut down the workforce was informed during a town hall last week.
The report further revealed that the employees fired were positioned across geographies including Guatemala, Philippines, and even India, to name a few. The software company also said to offer severance pay for each and every employee who is fired during the course of time. The last day at the company for these employees will be September 30, the company stated.
One of the employees laid off told the publication, “Microsoft had an issue with the quality of work. We used to monitor, curate, and edit content for its news platform MSN from across countries like India, Europe, and the US. They had recently automated the process as well for global news monitoring. Prior to this, two years ago, Burda Media was managing this site.”
Some of the other products and departments have also been impacted, including — trending on Bing, Geopolitical news curation, comment moderation, tabloid hit apps, and transformation by Teams.
Sources close to the matter have revealed that HCL’s contract has ended and Microsoft is expected to pass on the contract to some other vendor. The name of the vendor hasn’t been revealed but it could possibly be another massive IT company, Accenture.
The company, though, hasn’t officially confirmed anything about the lay offs and change of vendor. “Our Technology & Services vertical continues to see robust growth and is one of the fastest growing segments for us,” an HCL spokesperson said in an official statement to Moneycontrol.
HCL’s move to lay off hundreds of employees comes at a time when the tech industry is facing rough waves. Recently, some of the big tech companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and many others have laid off some employees or an entire department, blaming the economic crisis. Meanwhile, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has warned employees to put in their 100 per cent and asked managers to closely monitor productivity.
