Bengaluru Hosts High-Impact Sales Mission as Malaysia Deepens Trade Ties Ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026
Bengaluru, NFAPost: Malaysia has set its sights firmly on the Indian outbound travel market, announcing an ambitious target of 2.1 million tourist arrivals from India in 2026, as it successfully concluded its Sales Mission 2026 in Bengaluru.
Organised by Tourism Malaysia in partnership with the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA), the high-level engagement was held at Shangri-La Bengaluru and brought together 49 Malaysian sellers alongside leading travel trade partners from Bengaluru and across Karnataka—one of South India’s most influential outbound travel hubs.
The mission was led by Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, and Mdm Nuwal Fadhilah binti Ku Azmi, Senior Director, International Promotions (Asia/Africa) Division, underscoring Malaysia’s strategic focus on India, particularly the Southern region.
India: A High-Growth Source Market
India continues to be among Malaysia’s most important source markets. The country recorded 1,565,194 tourist arrivals from India in 2025, up from 1,365,387 in 2024—reflecting a robust 14.6% growth.
With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026) on the horizon, Malaysia is targeting 2.1 million Indian visitors, signalling confidence in sustained outbound travel momentum.
Datuk Manoharan Periasamy emphasised that strengthening trade partnerships remains central to achieving this goal.
“India is a priority growth market for Malaysia. Our focus is on deepening trade collaboration and showcasing the diverse experiences Malaysia offers—from leisure and family holidays to MICE, weddings, and luxury travel.”
Strong Air Connectivity Driving Demand
A major enabler of growth is enhanced air connectivity between India and Malaysia.
Currently, 238 weekly direct flights operate between the two countries, offering 47,399 seats from 14 Indian cities. South India alone accounts for 151 weekly direct flights and 29,541 seats, reinforcing the region’s importance in Malaysia’s inbound strategy.
The Sales Mission 2026 was supported by Batik Air as the Official Airline Partner, further strengthening connectivity and travel accessibility.
Strengthening Diplomatic and Trade Linkages
Mr. K. Saravana Kumar, Consul General of Malaysia in Chennai, described tourism as a strategic pillar of Malaysia–India relations.
He reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to facilitating industry partnerships, promotional initiatives, and stakeholder engagement across South India to boost outbound travel to Malaysia.
“Programmes such as tourism sales missions and networking platforms reinforce people-to-people connections and deepen cultural and travel exchanges between Malaysia and India.”
These efforts align with the broader push toward Visit Malaysia Year 2026, positioning Malaysia as a preferred, accessible, and diverse destination for Indian travellers.
Bengaluru: A Strategic Outbound Market
Mdm Nuwal Fadhilah binti Ku Azmi highlighted Bengaluru’s strategic relevance.
“Bengaluru continues to be a key market for Malaysia. Through MTEX and trade engagement initiatives, we are introducing updated tourism products, new destinations, and refreshed experiences ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.”
Mr. Hishamuddin Mustafa, Director of Tourism Malaysia Chennai, noted that Bengaluru remains one of the strongest markets in South India, particularly across leisure, luxury, MICE, weddings, and corporate travel segments.
“The Sales Mission serves as a vital platform to equip trade partners with updated destination knowledge and new opportunities as we prepare for VMY2026.”
Beyond Leisure: Expanding Segments
While Malaysia remains synonymous with island escapes, shopping, culture, and nature experiences, there is growing demand among Indian travellers for:
- MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions)
- Destination weddings
- Luxury family holidays
- Experiential and eco-tourism
The Sales Mission showcased Malaysia’s broad spectrum of offerings, positioning it as a multi-segment destination rather than a single-theme holiday market.
The Road to Visit Malaysia Year 2026
With consistent double-digit growth from India and robust connectivity, Malaysia is entering 2026 with strategic clarity: deepen trade ties, expand product awareness, and enhance ease of travel.
As India’s outbound travel market matures—particularly from cities like Bengaluru—destinations that combine accessibility, cultural familiarity, and experiential diversity stand to benefit.
Malaysia, it appears, intends to be at the forefront of that growth story.
