Festo Marks 40 Years in India with Ambitious Bengaluru GCC Push

German automation major plans to double India team, scale new 71,000 sq ft Global Capability Centre to 600 experts, and position Bengaluru as a global nerve centre for AI, software and smart manufacturing.

Bengaluru, NFAPost: In a decisive signal of confidence in India’s technological trajectory, German automation giant Festo on Tuesday inaugurated its new Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Bengaluru, marking 40 years of its incorporated presence in the country and outlining an ambitious roadmap that blends automation, AI, and digital engineering.

The 71,000 sq ft facility near Electronics City is more than a routine expansion. It represents a strategic shift — from a market-serving subsidiary to a globally integrated innovation hub. The company plans to scale the centre from its current 250 professionals to over 600 by 2030, effectively doubling its India-based capabilities.

India at the Core of Global Strategy

Ravi Sastry, Managing Director, Festo India, framed the investment as both symbolic and strategic.

“The momentum is with India, and India is definitely shining. This investment is a testimony that the world believes in India’s story,” Sastry said. “Our GCC in Bengaluru is aligned with Festo’s vision of automation for a sustainable future. The centre will play a significant role in driving global R&D initiatives while fostering collaboration with India’s rich technology and engineering talent pool.”

While Festo entered India as early as 1963 and established its incorporated presence in 1986, this latest move underscores a deeper integration into the company’s global innovation matrix. Today, Festo India employs over 1,000 people and works with more than 25,000 customers and institutions across industries.

Beyond Pneumatics: A Cultural Reset

Alok Maheshwari, Head of GCC, described the transformation underway as cultural as much as technological.

“Fifteen months back when I joined Festo, the biggest challenge was how to convert Festo into a software and technology company. From the outside, it is seen as a pneumatics and automation company,” he noted.

The GCC will house end-to-end product development capabilities, including advanced engineering, software development, data analytics, and process excellence. Notably, it will also feature a dedicated Product Security Lab — currently the only one of its kind within Festo’s global network.

Maheshwari emphasized that the company’s technology strategy is grounded in practicality rather than hype.

“We are not selling technology, we are selling solutions. If a simple script solves the problem, we will go with that instead of building a complex AI model.”

A People-First AI Philosophy

While AI and machine learning form a core part of the GCC’s mandate, Festo’s leadership is careful to position the technology as assistive rather than disruptive.

“AI will be more assistive rather than taking over. It makes your job easier and more efficient,” Maheshwari said, drawing parallels to the robotics revolution a decade ago.

The company is already deploying AI-led predictive maintenance systems for global clients, including automotive applications such as welding gun optimization. Yet, executives insist that every AI use case must meet strict criteria: functional, scalable, and economically viable.

Competing for Talent with Purpose

In Bengaluru’s fiercely competitive talent market, Festo believes its differentiation lies not in compensation alone, but in purpose and cross-functional mobility.

“If you go with the package point of view, you are never able to attract the right talent. First, you have to connect them with the cause,” Maheshwari observed.

Sastry added that unlike pure-play software firms, Festo offers professionals exposure across sales, production, supply chain, and engineering.

“You can find a bigger company than Festo, no doubt about it. But you will not get a better company than Festo,” he remarked.

A Long-Term Bet on India

Sebastian Beck, Member of the Management Board HR & Finance at Festo, described the milestone as a reflection of long-term conviction.

“Forty years of Festo in India is a powerful reflection of our belief in the country’s industrial and technological potential. As we look ahead, India will continue to play a strategic role in shaping Festo’s global innovation, digital capabilities, and sustainable growth.”

Headquartered in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, Festo operates in around 250 locations worldwide, employs over 20,000 people, and reports annual revenues of approximately €3.5 billion, with more than 8% invested in R&D.

With deep roots in automotive manufacturing and a growing eye on emerging sectors such as semiconductors and sustainable manufacturing, Festo’s Bengaluru GCC represents more than infrastructure expansion. It signals a structural pivot — positioning India not merely as a cost centre, but as a co-architect of its global innovation agenda.

As India cements its standing as a preferred destination for Global Capability Centres, Festo’s 40-year milestone may well mark the beginning of a new chapter — one where automation, AI, and engineering excellence converge under one roof in Bengaluru.
