Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs 2025: India Brace for High-Stakes Showdown Against Netherlands and Slovenia

With home support, renewed belief, and a cohesive squad, India eyes a historic berth in the World Group qualifiers as Group G action unfolds in Bengaluru

NFAPost, Bengaluru: The Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs return to India with high expectations and rising excitement, as the nation’s top women’s tennis players gear up for two decisive ties against Slovenia and the Netherlands at the S.M. Krishna Tennis Stadium in Bengaluru. For India, placed in Group G, the challenge is steep—but so is the ambition, as the hosts look to break into the prestigious World Group qualifiers for the first time.

India will open their campaign against Slovenia on Saturday, followed by a crucial clash with the Netherlands on Sunday. Only the group winner progresses, turning the weekend into a defining moment for the team and the future of Indian women’s tennis.

“Playing in India is a privilege”

Indian team captain Vishal Uppal emphasised the significance of competing at home and the momentum it brings.

“It is definitely an honour and it is very special for us to be playing the Billie Jean King Cup Playoff in Bengaluru,” Uppal said. “Indian women’s tennis is on the right path, and we’re very excited. Playing in India is a privilege for us.”

Uppal noted that the squad has built excellent synergy since their outing in Pune earlier this year.

“We have kept in touch and monitored each other’s progress. It’s all about becoming one cohesive unit and working toward a common goal,” he added. “We know we’re up against two quality teams, but what we can control is our effort, attitude, and the environment within the team—and that’s been great.”

Team camaraderie at the core

One of India’s brightest young talents, Sahaja Yamalapalli, echoed her captain’s confidence in the team dynamic.

“It’s great to have the team around us. We can always fall back on each other,” she said. “Tennis is usually an individual sport, so when you bring in a team environment, it gives a completely different perspective and energy.”

India’s line-up—featuring Sahaja, Shrivalli Bhamidipathy, Ankita Raina, Riya Bhatia, and Prarthana Thombare—brings together a mix of youth, experience, and proven big-match temperament.

Slovenia and the Netherlands arrive prepared

The Group G fixtures begin on Friday with Slovenia taking on the Netherlands. Both countries have arrived early in Bengaluru, using additional time to adapt to the city’s playing conditions.

Slovenia’s top player, Tamara Zidanšek, highlighted the importance of adjusting to the court characteristics.

“We came early because the conditions are very different—there’s a bit of altitude, the courts are bouncy, and the balls jump high,” Zidanšek said. “Having those extra days to prepare has really helped.”

The Netherlands—the highest-ranked team in the group—expressed confidence ahead of the opening tie while praising the event’s organisation.

Team captain Elise Tamaëla said the squad feels at home in Bengaluru and is ready for a fierce start.

“Every match is different, but we carry confidence from last year,” she noted. “In a country tie, anything can happen. The important thing is preparation, and I feel our team is well prepared.”

A pivotal moment for Indian tennis

With all three teams now settled—Slovenia and India arriving on November 8, and the Netherlands on November 10—the stage is set for three afternoons of thrilling tennis in Bengaluru.

This marks the first time India is hosting the Billie Jean King Cup Playoffs, adding to the sense of occasion and pride.

The schedule for the Group G ties is as follows, with all matches starting at 3:00 PM IST:

  • Friday, 14 November: Slovenia vs. Netherlands
  • Saturday, 15 November: India vs. Slovenia
  • Sunday, 16 November: India vs. Netherlands

The stakes could not be higher. For the Indian team and its supporters, these matches represent not just an opportunity—but a statement of intent on the global stage.
