Seven nations, one kitchen: Young student chefs battle it out at the IIHM Young Chef Olympiad 2026 Bengaluru round
Bengaluru, NFAPost: Bengaluru stepped confidently into the global culinary spotlight on Monday as it hosted an official competition round of the 12th International Young Chef Olympiad (YCO) 2026, widely regarded as the world’s largest and most prestigious culinary contest for student chefs.
Held at the state-of-the-art kitchens of International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) Bangalore, the high-stakes round brought together emerging culinary talents from seven countries—Mauritius, Colombia, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, England, Equatorial Guinea and Timor-Leste—each vying for global recognition through skill, creativity and discipline.
Organised by IIHM under the aegis of the International Hospitality Council (IHC), London, the Bengaluru round followed stringent international competition and judging protocols. The challenges were designed to rigorously test technique, innovation, hygiene standards and professional kitchen conduct—benchmarks expected of future leaders of the global hospitality industry.
Global standards, local stage
The Bengaluru leg of YCO 2026 was supported by a strong consortium of industry partners, with Brigade Hospitality – Signature Club as Venue Sponsor and Holiday Inn as the ‘United World of Young Chefs’ (UWYC) Venue Sponsor. The event also received backing from McCain Foodservice, Ariane Porcelain, American Pistachios and Karnataka Tourism, underlining the growing industry confidence in the Olympiad’s global stature.
Evaluation was overseen by an eminent international jury comprising Prof. David Foskett, Ms. Vita Whitaker, Chef Vincenzo Oliveri, Chef Steven Ronald Munkley, Chef Mark Reynolds, and Bengaluru’s own celebrated culinary professional Chef Abhijit Saha—ensuring transparency, rigour and world-class assessment.
Voices from the helm
Speaking on Bengaluru’s growing role in international culinary education, Ms. Sanchari Chowdhury, Director, IIHM Hotel School Bangalore and Head–South India, said:
“Bengaluru continues to play a significant role in nurturing young culinary talent and strengthening India’s presence on the global hospitality education map. The introduction of the Young Chef India round has added a strong national dimension to the Olympiad, allowing Indian students to benchmark themselves against international standards.”
Reflecting on the broader vision of the Olympiad, Dr. Suborno Bose, CEO, IHC, Founder of Young Chef Olympiad and Chairman, IIHM, noted:
“Over the years, the Young Chef Olympiad has evolved beyond a competition. It is a global platform for learning, collaboration and cultural exchange. YCO 2026 reinforces the values of sustainability, professionalism and unity—values that will define the future of the hospitality industry.”
Beyond competition: Culinary Youth Diplomacy
True to its philosophy, YCO 2026 in Bengaluru extended well beyond the kitchen. The event showcased the spirit of ‘Culinary Youth Diplomacy’, with student chefs and mentors engaging in cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration through food.
Participants also competed for special recognitions such as the YCO Sustainability Award and the Spirit of Young Chef Olympiad International Award, celebrating excellence, responsibility and leadership beyond technical prowess.
Under the banner of the ‘United World of Young Chefs’, each participant presented a signature dish rooted in their country’s culinary heritage—turning the Bengaluru kitchens into a living showcase of global food cultures. The city had earlier hosted the national inauguration of YCO 2026 on February 1, marking the formal launch of this year’s Olympiad in India.
