Axis Bank Emerges First Global Financial Services Institution To Receive BSI’s ISO/IEC 42001 AIMS Certification

The certification reinforces Axis Bank’s commitment to responsible and secure AI governance

Mumabi, NFAPost: Axis Bank, one of the largest private sector banks in India, has become the first financial services institution globally to be certified by BSI for the international standard, ISO/IEC 42001 Information Technology – Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS).

After a comprehensive audit assessing the Bank’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance, risk management, and project execution practices, Axis Bank was formally awarded the certification at a presentation ceremony at Axis House Worli on 19 January 2026.

The standard, which is globally applicable, is designed to enable the safe management of AI and build the trust needed for its secure and responsible use across society. It supports organisations in the responsible deployment of AI, addressing key considerations such as non‑transparent automated decision‑making, the use of machine learning in place of human‑coded logic, and the need for continuous learning.

The AIMS standard outlines how to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve an AI management system, with a clear focus on safeguards. As an impact-based framework, it sets out requirements for context-based AI risk assessments, details risk treatments and controls for both internal and external AI products and services.

It further helps organisations in fostering a quality-centric culture and in responsibly shaping the design, development and delivery of AI-enabled products and services that benefit both the organisation and society.

BSI AI & Digital Solutions Global Managing Director Omkar Joshi said AI has the potential to be a significant force for good in society, transforming lives everywhere.

“But to realise its benefits, having the guardrails in place for the safe and ethical use of AI is critical. Certification to this standard offers reassurance to stakeholders on the safe and responsible use of AI in an organization’s products and services, paving the way for them to harness AI to accelerate progress towards a better future and a sustainable world,” said BSI AI & Digital Solutions Global Managing Director Omkar Joshi.

BSI AI & Digital Solutions Global Managing Director Omkar Joshi said Axis Bank’s achievement demonstrates how digital innovation and strong governance can progress together. “BSI is proud to work with Axis Bank in strengthening trust, resilience and accountability across the banking ecosystem,” said BSI AI & Digital Solutions Global Managing Director Omkar Joshi.

Commenting on the achievement, Axis Bank Chief Information Security Officer Vinay Tiwari said Axis Bank firmly believes that the sustainable value of artificial intelligence lies in innovation that is anchored in strong governance, transparency, and security‑by‑design principles.

“BSI ISO/IEC 42001 AIMS certification reinforces our commitment to embedding responsible AI practices across the organization, supported by comprehensive risk management processes, robust control frameworks, and globally benchmarked standards. The adoption of ISO/IEC 42001 further strengthens our ability to scale AI initiatives in a secure and ethical manner, enabling us to deliver meaningful innovation while continuing to safeguard customer trust and data,” said Axis Bank Chief Information Security Officer Vinay Tiwari.

According to Arvian Research spokesperson, companies from leading global cross-functional teams with startup ventures to entities with enterprise-scale operations, there is a necessity for launching new AI and data-driven solutions, establishing regulatory frameworks and creating sustainable growth through clarity of purpose, commercial excellence, and high-performing cultures.

“It is high time that all companies’ executive leaders with a deep understanding of technology and people should combine operational rigour with visionary thinking. Now it is the historical moment where AI is turning strategic vision into execution, bridging technology, governance and commercial performance to drive trusted, responsible, and scalable outcomes. I believe that with BSI’s AI/digital solutions, companies can achieve their ambitions in the regulatory digital assurance space,” said Arvian Research spokesperson.
