Macron in Mumbai: Defence and AI Drive India–France Talks

Leaders to Launch India–France Year of Innovation 2026 Amid Push to Deepen Strategic and Tech Ties

Bengaluru, NFAPost: French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Mumbai late Monday night for a three-day official visit to India, setting the stage for high-level bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi focused on defence cooperation, artificial intelligence, rare earth supply chains and emerging technologies.

President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport shortly before midnight and were received by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Prime Minister Modi extended a warm welcome on social media, writing:

“Welcome to India, my dear friend Emmanuel Macron. India looks forward to advancing our bilateral ties to new heights. See you in Mumbai and later in Delhi.”

Strategic Talks at Lok Bhavan

The two leaders are scheduled to meet at 3:15 pm at Lok Bhavan for wide-ranging bilateral discussions.

According to sources, the talks will review progress under the India–France Strategic Partnership and the Horizon 2047 roadmap adopted during the Prime Minister’s visit to France last year. Nearly a dozen Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, covering defence, trade, skilling, healthcare, critical minerals and supply chain resilience.

Defence and Rafale Expansion

Strengthening defence industrial cooperation is expected to be a central theme, including discussions around possible expansion of the Dassault Rafale programme.

India and France have long maintained a robust defence relationship, and officials indicate that the focus now is on greater technology transfer, co-development and joint manufacturing.

AI and Emerging Technologies

Artificial intelligence is also high on the agenda, with both countries keen to align innovation ecosystems and collaborate in frontier technologies. Macron’s visit coincides with India’s broader AI push, as he is scheduled to travel to New Delhi later this week to participate in the India AI Impact Summit.

Year of Innovation 2026

At 5:15 pm, Modi and Macron will jointly inaugurate the India–France Year of Innovation 2026 at the Gateway of India.

The event will bring together business leaders, start-ups, researchers and innovators from both nations, marking the formal launch of a year-long initiative aimed at strengthening technological collaboration, entrepreneurship and research partnerships.

The initiative is expected to prioritise AI, green technologies, defence manufacturing, space cooperation and critical minerals — areas increasingly central to both countries’ strategic autonomy.

Indo-Pacific and Global Outlook

Beyond bilateral matters, the leaders are likely to exchange views on regional and global developments, particularly Indo-Pacific cooperation, maritime security and evolving geopolitical dynamics.

France remains one of India’s most consistent partners in the Indo-Pacific, with shared interests in ensuring a free, open and rules-based maritime order.

Heightened Security, High Expectations

Security has been tightened across South Mumbai, with traffic diversions in place around Lok Bhavan and the Gateway of India.

This marks President Macron’s fourth visit to India since taking office in 2017 and his first to Mumbai. The visit is widely seen as a significant milestone in one of India’s most trusted strategic partnerships — one that is now expanding from defence and diplomacy into cutting-edge technologies and economic resilience.

Further details of the agreements and joint outcomes are expected to be announced in a joint press statement later today.

For New Delhi and Paris, the message appears clear: the partnership is no longer confined to legacy defence deals — it is increasingly about shaping the technological and strategic architecture of the future.
