Bengaluru, NFAPost: Muhammed Majeed, chairman and founder of Sami-Sabinsa Group with more than Rs 3000 crore turnover business empire in the nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals areas, passed away on Wednesday at Chennai.
Born and raised in Kollam, Muhammaed Majeed is known as father of Indian nutraceutical business. He migrated to the US after becoming a pharma graduate from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1975. Majeed completed his Master’s degree from Long Island University New York and PhD in Pharmacy from Saint Johns University in the US, and landed jobs at the R&D divisions of pharmaceutical giants Pfizer Inc and Carter-Wallace.
He began his journey in the healthcare and health science sector by developing standardised herbal extracts from Ayurvedic plants in India and creating a global market for them. Muhammed Majeed began his entrepreneurial journey by forming Sabinsa Corporation in the US in 1988.
After the US business journey, he started another journey in India by launching Sami-Sabinsa Group in Bengaluru in 1991. He started Sami Labs as the research and development (R&D) and manufacturing arm of the group, and Sabinsa as the sales and marketing wing. Through Sabinsa, ingredients from India were marketed throughout the world.

The strategic decision of Majeed helped the company to open its Sami Labs facility in Bengaluru and helped the company develop novel approaches to retain the biological activity of natural ingredients while simultaneously addressing formulation challenges and product safety criteria.
Under the leadership of internationally acclaimed scientist turned entrepreneur in the field of Evidence Based Medicine, the Group has established independent research divisions including Natural Drugs, Phytochemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, Tissue Culture, Biotechnology, Analytical R&D, Biological Research, Microbiology, and Formulations R&D all of which coordinate in a synergistic work model to create products meeting international standards.
Sami-Sabinsa also supplies finished dosage forms in capsules, tablets and bi-layer tablets in bulk or in bottles. Curcumin C3 Complex, LactoSpore, Gugulipid, BioPerine, Citrine, and Saberry are some of its ingredient brands that are used in food, beverage, nutrition, personal care and cosmetic products.
To increase the production of active nutraceutical ingredients (ANI) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), Sabinsa’s parent company, Sami-Sabinsa Group, inaugurated a state-of-the-art greenfield manufacturing facility at Hassan in the State of Karnataka (India) on March 17, 2023. The Hassan facility will produce 23 different ANIs, APIs and intermediates, including calebin-A, resveratrol, SabiWhite, pterostilbene, Cosmoperine, 1, 2-hexanediol, 1,2-octanediol, diindolylmethane, indole-3-carbinol, ferulic acid, urolithins, etc.
The facility is equipped with 18 reactors (including eight glass-line reactors), two hydrogenators and other specialized equipment such as agitated nutsche filter dryers, centrifuges and Rotocone Vacuum Dryers. Another important feature of the facility is its Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) capability, which reportedly minimizes the production-associated ecological footprint.
The Group has a sizeable patent portfolio comprising over 383 granted patents and several pending patent applications worldwide. Sami-Sabinsa Group manufactures its products as per global standards at its seven state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities located in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Utah (USA).

Muhammaed Majeed won award for the best entrepreneur from National Federation Of Asian American in the year 1996 and also won the US Congress special award The Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his professional achievement.
He is survived by his kids Sami, Shaheen Majeed and Anju Majeed.
