Bengaluru Gears Up to Host India’s Largest Annual Astronomy Gathering
Bengaluru, NFAPost: Bengaluru is set to witness a stellar event as it welcomes astronomers from across India for the 42nd meeting of the Astronomical Society of India. The prestigious gathering, jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and the J.N. Planetarium, will take place from January 31 to February 4, 2024.
The scientific discourse during the event will cover a wide array of topics, including discussions on the Sun, planets, black holes, and the mysteries of the cosmos. With around 750 astronomers in attendance, the meeting promises to be an intellectual feast for enthusiasts and scholars alike. The formal inauguration is scheduled for February 1 at 9:30 am in the J.N. Tata Main Auditorium, IISc.
This year’s highlights include the release of the Astronomy Vision document, the culmination of a nationwide endeavour envisioning the future of cosmic exploration from India. Additionally, a workshop on the recently launched AdityaL1 mission, India’s first space-based solar observatory, is expected to draw significant attention. Plenary lectures will shed light on India’s planetary exploration program and pulsar timing array initiatives. The ASI awards, recognizing outstanding contributions to astronomy and astrophysics research, will be presented during the inaugural function.
For the public and school students, a series of engaging events have been planned. The Public Outreach and Education Committee of the Astronomical Society of India, in collaboration with local organizers and astronomy industries, will host popular lectures covering diverse themes such as space exploration and the role of astronomy in defining time and calendars. Specialized talks on astrophotography, featuring a showcase of the night skies of the Indian Himalayas and the importance of preserving the celestial heritage, are on the agenda. Solar and night sky observation events are organized, and a star party is in the works at the J.N. Planetarium.
