The Bureau of Indian Standards hosts a global dialogue to shape the future of standardization and sustainability under India’s G20 presidency.
New Delhi, NFAPost: In an auspicious inauguration ceremony, Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Environment, Forest & Climate Change, kickstarted the two-day event, ‘The G20 Standards Dialogue 2023’, hosted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This dialogue, held under the banner of India’s G20 presidency, is a crucial platform for discussions and insights on standardization, emphasizing the theme ‘Zero Defect Zero Effect.’
The G20 Standards Dialogue 2023 is a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and the Ministry of Commerce & Industry of the Government of India. The theme, ‘Zero Defect Zero Effect,’ underscores the pivotal role that standards play in our global community, offering guidance for sustainable resource utilization.
Minister Choubey highlighted the critical role of standards in ensuring quality, promoting global trade, and fostering innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. Shri Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, reiterated the importance of standards in our daily lives, particularly in ensuring quality and facilitating global trade.
The global perspective on standards was enriched by the virtual participation of Sergio Mujica, Secretary-General of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO), who stressed the significance of standardization in enhancing global capabilities. Philippe Metzger, Secretary-General & CEO of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), emphasized the relentless contribution of standards to our daily lives.
Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, explained the concept of the G20 Standards Dialogue and its potential to promote productive discussions, gain valuable insights, and address future challenges. This dialogue brings together G20 member countries and the World Standards Cooperation to work towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and regulated future, aligning with the broader vision of ‘Zero Defect and Zero Effect.’
The event is a platform for industry leaders, government officials, standards professionals, regulators, and policymakers to collaborate and advance standardization and global regulatory environments. It echoes the G20 vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future,’ with a strong emphasis on sustainability, regulatory excellence, and stakeholder engagement.
The first day of the event witnessed the presence of high-ranking officials from the Government of India and the World Standards Cooperation, with a dedicated session on Standards for Sustainability. Today’s sessions encompassed Technical Regulations and Good Regulatory Practices, as well as Stakeholder Engagement for Standardization, all aimed at promoting sustainable development, economic stability, and inclusive collaboration in the standardization process.
