Bengaluru, NFAPost: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up to host a three-day workshop on Space Situational Awareness & Space Traffic Management (SSA & STM). This informative event is tailored for Indian students, researchers, and faculty members and is scheduled to take place from October 12 to 14, 2023, at ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru.
Space Situational Awareness & Space Traffic Management: Ensuring Space Safety
SSA involves acquiring comprehensive knowledge about the space environment, encompassing the location, orbit, and function of all human-made objects in space. Additionally, it encompasses understanding natural objects and phenomena such as space weather, asteroids, and comets. The primary objective of SSA is to prevent collisions among space objects and mitigate the effects of space debris, ensuring the safety, stability, and sustainability of outer space activities. STM, on the other hand, is the process that guarantees the secure and efficient operation of all space objects. It involves collecting and analyzing SSA data, devising collision avoidance procedures, and implementing them. STM is also responsible for the safe disposal of space debris.
These aspects of SSA and STM are fundamental for any responsible agency, company, startup, or university involved in space-related activities. They require a wealth of human expertise and dedicated observational facilities like radars, telescopes, and space-based platforms for precise orbital information of space objects and guidelines, both on a national and international scale. ISRO has already established the “ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM)” to provide services for safeguarding Indian space assets.
Fostering Expertise and Collaboration
As ISRO encourages private sector involvement in the space sector, it recognizes the importance of fostering expertise in these domains. This not only creates career opportunities but also ensures the safety and sustainability of space endeavours. To further this goal, ISRO is organizing this workshop. Participants can expect expert technical talks from renowned ISRO scientists and engaging sessions with top-level scientists and engineers from various ISRO Centers.
Who’s Invited?
The workshop is open to B.E/B.Tech./M.E/M.Tech/M.Sc./PhD students and research scholars pursuing courses related to space science, mathematics, physical sciences, engineering, and technology at Indian institutes and universities. Faculty members from Indian academic institutes are also encouraged to register and apply. Selection will be based on academic performance and/or an online quiz.
Important Dates
- Registration closes on August 30, 2023.
- Results will be announced on September 12, 2023.
Participants are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
