PV Sindhu, ace Indian badminton player, scripted history on Sunday as she defeated He Bing Jiao of China to become the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals.
Sindhu defeated He Bing Jiao 21-13 and 21-15 in the bronze medal match. Sindhu was clinical throughout the contest and didn’t give her opponent any chance in the match. Sindhu had suffered a heart-breaking loss to world no.1 Tai Tzu Ying in the semi-final on Saturday. Sindhu lost the semi-final 18-21, 12-21.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first ones to extend his wishes on social media, calling Sindhu ‘India’s pride’ and saying everyone in the country is “elated” by her “stellar performance”.
“We are all elated by the stellar performance by @Pvsindhu1. Congratulations to her on winning the Bronze at @Tokyo2020. She is India’s pride and one of our most outstanding Olympians,” Modi posted on Sunday.
Sports Authority of India congratulated her for achieving the rare feat in Indian sports history. “Proud moment for India as @Pvsindhu1 puts up a brilliant performance and becomes the first Indian woman to win two individual medals at the Olympics. We are proud of her achievements,” said SAI on its twitter handle.
At Rio Olympics in 2016, she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal. She charted the history of achieving the feat as she is the youngest and first female individual to bag an Olympic Silver medal representing India.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur also wished her and shared his happiness by tweeting, “SMASHING VICTORY PV Sindhu !!! You dominated the game & made history #Tokyo2020 ! An Olympic medalist twice over! Third place medal India is so proud of you & awaits your return! YOU DID IT !”.
Saina Nehwal, who won bronze at the London Olympics in 2012, is the second overall athlete to win olypic medal for the country.
