Tokyo, NFAPost: To create the newest attraction to brighten the nightlife in Tokyo, the government started “Tokyo Night & Light”, a projection mapping display on a surface of 13,904.956 square meters using light and sound at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
Governor Yuriko Koike inaugurated the programme at a grand opening event at the Tokyo’s main landmarks as its canvas.
“I am happy to announce that the event also went down in the Guinness World Records as the “largest architectural projection-mapped display (permanent) anywhere in the world,” said Governor Yuriko Koike.
Besides a projection mapping display, exhibiting many different light and sound effects, the event was accompanied by a live performance from the artist Aimer.
The event was attended by 1,100 audience members who were selected in a draw from thousands of applicants and it was a huge success.
Artist Aimer attended the event as a surprise guest and her live music performance accompanied the projection mapping display on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. The atmosphere in the audience was electric when she performed two of her most popular songs: “Zankyosanka” and “800.
Governor Koike explained the purpose behind the project and said the programme combined with art and Japanese projection mapping technology will make this into a new tourist attraction.
“The projection mapping display was accompanied by a live orchestra and created a fantastic atmosphere at the venue with different content being shown on weekdays and weekends. Finally, there was a Guinness World Records™ Certification Ceremony and Governor Koike was presented with the official certificate for the “largest architectural projection-mapped display (permanent),” said Governor Koike.
Regular displays began on Monday, February 26, 2024 (scheduled to be shown daily except in cases of bad weather, etc.). The best viewing location is Citizens’ Plaza (8-1, Nishi-Shinjuku 2-chome, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo). The event will start from sunset to approximately 9 p m.
