Bengaluru, NFAPost: In a significant stride towards technological self-sufficiency, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has announced plans to establish the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre in collaboration with industry and academia. Minister of State, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, revealed this visionary initiative on Friday, underlining Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s keen interest in nurturing indigenous leadership in semiconductor research.
A distinguished panel of global and national semiconductor experts has convened to meticulously design the framework for the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre. According to Chandrasekhar, this forthcoming institution is poised to emerge as a vanguard in semiconductor research on a global scale.
“The comprehensive blueprint, encompassing its focus areas and operational design, has been expertly documented in a high-calibre report,” Chandrasekhar stated in an exclusive interview with PTI. Anticipating tangible progress, he expressed optimism that the institution will commence its formative stages by the year 2024.
Chandrasekhar went on to emphasize that the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre aspires to ascend to the ranks of premier semiconductor research institutes within the next 4-5 years. He assured that the institution will be accorded ample financial support, with no limitations on the necessary investment.
When probed about the nature of the investment—whether in the form of grants or equity for Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) stemming from the institution—Chandrasekhar maintained that this crucial decision will be deliberated upon at a later juncture.
The inception of the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre is poised to mark a pivotal juncture in India’s technological trajectory, propelling the nation towards self-reliance and global leadership in semiconductor research. As the ambitious project takes shape, India’s foray into this critical domain promises to be a watershed moment for the country’s technological landscape.
