Pixxel, the Pioneering Space-Tech Startup, Secures a Generous Grant from iDEX, Backed by the Ministry of Defence, to Forge Advanced Multi-Purpose Satellites for the Indian Air Force
Bengaluru, NFAPost: In a groundbreaking development, Pixxel, a prominent space-tech startup, has been awarded a substantial grant from iDEX (Innovations For Defence Excellence), an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Defence. Supported by renowned entities such as Google, Blume Ventures, and Omnivore VC, Pixxel’s latest achievement positions it to play a vital role in India’s ambitious space and defence plans. The grant falls under the Mission DefSpace Challenge, an integral part of the broader iDEX Prime (Space) initiative.
Pixxel, founded in 2019 by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, has rapidly risen to prominence in the space-tech domain, specializing in the development of hyperspectral imaging satellites. These cutting-edge devices offer real-time, AI-facilitated data on various environmental phenomena. With an impressive funding pool of $71 million, including a recent Series B round contribution of $36 million, Pixxel’s expertise in crafting agile satellites has gained significant recognition.
The exact value of the grant received from iDEX remains undisclosed; however, it is known to be in the multi-crore range. This funding will enable Pixxel to design small, multi-purpose satellites weighing no more than 150 kilograms. The satellites will be equipped to perform a range of critical tasks, including electro-optical, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, and hyperspectral imaging. This venture aims to bolster India’s defence architecture while significantly expanding the country’s space technology capabilities.
The iDEX initiative, a strategic plan by the Ministry of Defence, aims to stimulate technological evolution in the defence and aerospace sectors. By bringing together a diverse mix of MSMEs, startups, and R&D institutes, iDEX fosters innovation in these domains, making it a perfect match for Pixxel’s ambitious goals.
Pixxel’s roadmap is nothing short of ambitious. The company plans to launch six satellites into orbit in 2024, followed by an astonishing 18 satellites in 2025. These advanced satellites will harvest crucial hyperspectral images of the Earth, gathering data across various electromagnetic spectrum wavelengths. The data obtained will significantly enrich our understanding of the planet’s environment and wellness.
Pixxel’s success is part of a larger trend showcasing the swift progression of India’s space-tech sector. Other pioneering companies like Agnikul and Skyroot Aerospace are also making remarkable strides in this field. Forecasts predict that India’s space-tech market may reach an impressive $77 billion by 2030, demonstrating the country’s dedication to fostering deep-tech innovations in the space domain.
Pixxel’s partnership with iDEX marks a milestone in India’s space exploration journey and opens up new opportunities for technological advancement and defence preparedness. With Pixxel’s cutting-edge satellite technology and unwavering support from the government, India’s space-tech sector is poised for an exciting future.
