New Delhi, NFAPost: In a recent statement, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that Cyclone Biparjoy poses a significant risk to the districts of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar in Gujarat. With its projected path crossing the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts near Jakhau Port on the evening of June 15, the cyclone is expected to escalate into a “very severe cyclonic storm,” exhibiting sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph and gusts reaching up to 150 kmph.
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Chief of IMD, expressed concerns over the extensive destructive potential of Cyclone Biparjoy during a press conference. The storm’s impact could result in highly intense rainfall, surpassing 20 cm, particularly in the districts of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar on June 15. These regions typically do not experience such heavy precipitation, heightening the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, as emphasized by Mohapatra.
Furthermore, Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, and Junagarh are also expected to receive substantial rainfall, ranging from heavy to very heavy. In addition to the torrential rains, these districts will face the brunt of strong winds gusting up to 145 kilometres per hour.
The IMD has issued a warning about tidal waves that could reach heights of up to six meters, posing a severe threat to the low-lying coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch. As a precautionary measure, evacuation efforts have been recommended, and local authorities are promptly taking action.
Given the potential devastation and risks associated with Cyclone Biparjoy, it is crucial for residents in the affected regions to stay vigilant, follow the instructions of local authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
The IMD will continue to closely monitor the cyclone’s progress and provide regular updates to assist both government agencies and the public in effectively managing the impending cyclonic conditions.
