During the Sony Corporate Strategy Meeting in Tokyo in 2023, NP Singh, the managing director and CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), announced that SonyLIV, operated by SPNI, has achieved a milestone of 33.3 million paid subscribers worldwide, including distributor partnerships. The platform offers a diverse catalogue of over 40,000 hours of content in eight languages.
This figure surpasses the industry’s previous prediction of 26 million subscribers for the previous year. Singh emphasized the significance of India as a global economic powerhouse and an attractive destination for artists, content creators, game developers, studios, platforms, and technology companies. He stated that Sony’s efforts in India align with their purpose of evoking emotions and aiming to exceed expectations.
Singh also highlighted Sony as the only media company with a profitable digital operation. SonyLIV’s paid subscriber base has experienced rapid growth, rising from 700,000 in early 2020. The platform now boasts an average annual revenue per user of ₹573, owing to the success of numerous hit offerings.
In addition to SonyLIV, SPNI has a substantial presence in India, operating 26 television channels and amassing a viewership of 700 million across 167 countries. The company has made significant investments in sports, including prestigious cricket properties, UEFA tournaments, World Wrestling Entertainment, and Grand Slam Tennis, among others.
Furthermore, SPNI and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd entered into a merger agreement in 2021. Although the merger received approval from stock exchanges and the Competition Commission of India, it is currently pending clearance from the National Company Law Tribunal.
