Patanjali, a well-known company, is facing a legal challenge after allegations were made by a lawyer regarding the use of a non-vegetarian substance called ‘Samudra Phen’ (cuttlefish) in one of its dental products, Divya Dant Manjan. The product is marketed and labelled as a vegetarian item, which has raised concerns about consumer rights and misrepresentation.
The lawyer, Shasha Jain, took to Twitter to express her concerns and posted a copy of the legal notice she sent to Patanjali. In her caption, she highlighted that the alleged use of ‘Samudra Phen’ in a product labelled as vegetarian infringes upon consumer rights and is offensive to vegetarian communities, including her own.
Jain emphasized that the inclusion of a non-vegetarian ingredient in Divya Dant Manjan while marketing it as a vegetarian product, violates both consumer rights and labeling regulations specific to this category of products. She further stated that her family members, relatives, colleagues, and friends who use the product felt their religious sentiments were hurt upon learning about the deceptive use of ‘Samudra Phen’. As a user of multiple Patanjali products herself, Jain expressed her reluctance to continue using them until she receives clarification from the company regarding this matter.
In the legal notice, Jain requested Patanjali to provide clarifications within 15 days of receiving the notice. She warned that failure to respond appropriately would compel her to initiate legal proceedings against the company in a court of law.
This controversy surrounding Patanjali and the alleged use of ‘Samudra Phen’ in Divya Dant Manjan has garnered attention on social media platforms, raising concerns among consumers and the vegetarian community. The company now faces the task of addressing these allegations and providing a satisfactory response to the lawyer’s legal notice within the specified timeframe.
