Apple, Google, Samsung, and other companies including Tile, Chipolo, and Pebblebee have joined forces to combat unwanted tracking through Bluetooth devices that were originally intended to help locate lost items like keys or luggage. This collaboration aims to establish standards for preventing covert surveillance on Apple’s AirTag trackers and similar products.
Although AirTags have gained popularity as a tool for finding lost property, they have also been misused by stalkers to track unsuspecting individuals. This joint proposal seeks to address this issue and make it unnecessary for individuals to worry about being secretly tracked.
Since its launch in 2021, the $30 AirTag has become a popular device for locating various lost items. However, stalkers have also exploited AirTags and similar devices to follow people without their knowledge, including former romantic partners.
Apple and AirTag aim to have a solution to counter stealth tracking in place by the end of this year. The remedy will be disseminated through software upgrades for Android and iPhone.
