San Francisco / New Delhi, NFAPost: American tech giant Microsoft has revealed its plans to release the next big Windows 11 update, version 22H2, on September 20.
According to The Verge, sources familiar with the company’s plans tell that Microsoft will roll out Windows 11 22H2 through Windows Update on September 20th, a week after the company’s regular Patch Tuesday fixes.
The release date for 22H2 was revealed recently by Windows Central. Microsoft has been testing Windows 11 22H2 for months, and it will include a number of new improvements, like app folders in the Start menu, drag and drop on the taskbar, and new touch gestures and animations.
The company is also adding a new Live Captions accessibility feature with 22H2, which is ideal for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or anyone who wants to caption audio automatically, reported The Verge.
Similarly, a new Voice Access tool that allows people to control their PCs by using voice commands is part of 22H2.
The Task Manager is also being overhauled in Windows 11 22H2, with a new dark mode and a far better layout that includes a new command bar and an efficiency mode to limit apps from consuming resources.
Snap Layouts will also be greatly improved in 22H2, making it easier to drag an app to reveal all the layouts users can use to arrange apps.
Microsoft is also working on tabs for File Explorer, which will arrive a little later than September 20. Windows Central reported that another update for 22H2 is planned later this year that includes File Explorer tabs and a new Suggested Actions feature, as per The Verge.
Microsoft, govt plan to train 250,000 civil servants in computer skills
Microsoft and the Indian government will collaborate for a programme to train nearly 250,000 civil servants in using the company’s suite of digital tools.
The partnership between the tech giant, the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), and the Capacity Building Commission (CBC) aims to help civil servants in helping the underprivileged. It will help them in delivering last-mile social welfare services, said a statement from Microsoft.
The CBC does capacity building for the ministries of Defence, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Expenditure, Finance, Social Justice, Civil Aviation, Ports and Shipping, and Labour. A major competence gap identified among civil servants was the lack of digital productivity application skills needed while working on Microsoft Office tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint presentation.
“Our aim is to develop citizen-friendly and business-friendly policies. Technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are now an essential component of our work life. Therefore, it is imperative that our workforce is trained in these programmes,” said Rajesh Aggarwal, secretary, MSDE.
“One of the key capabilities is being competent in various digital technologies for day-to-day work. The collaboration with MSDE and Microsoft will allow civil servants to be trained digitally at a time of their own choosing. It will enhance their capabilities and allow them to be more effective,” said Adil Zainulbhai, chairman of CBC.
As part of the collaboration, the company will develop an online learning course on Microsoft Office 365 digital productivity suite offerings for MSDE.
“Through this programme, we are aiming to empower central government employees on key digital skills and amplify the vision of Digital India. This initiative will not only drive more productivity but will also enable ease of doing business with more digital solutions,” said Ashutosh Chadha, group head & director, government affairs, Microsoft India.
Microsoft marks OneDrive’s 15th anniversary with new features, design
Microsoft will be marking OneDrive’s 15th anniversary with a new landing page, called OneDrive Home.
According to The Verge, instead of arriving on the My files tab when a user first opens OneDrive, they’ll find themselves on the new Home page that resembles that dashboard in the online version of Office.
Similar to the Office web app, OneDrive Home contains a list of user files, organized by how recently they accessed them. Above the list are filters that let users sort their documents by Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF file types.
As per The Verge, there’s also a new ‘Activity’ column to the right of the ‘Owner’ file field that tells a user when someone leaves a comment, @mentions another user, or assigns them a task within a shared document.
On the left side of the Home view, Microsoft’s adding a new Quick access section, where users can find and pin their most frequently-accessed spaces.
Unfortunately, these changes aren’t live right now. As per The Verge, Microsoft has said OneDrive Home will be available in “the coming months.”
From what it looks like, though, the new Home page could serve as a central hub that should help users stay organized while collaborating remotely, reported the outlet.
