New Delhi, NFAPost: Google is preparing to exclude nearly 900,000 apps, which have been abandoned or not been updated from the Play Store. Google has some 869,000 abandoned apps or apps that have not been updated in two years.
Google is preparing to hide those apps to protect their users’ security, making it impossible for users to download them until the developers update them. Google earlier deleted 150 malicious apps from the play store. These apps were reportedly part of a campaign called UltimaSMS, which basically scammers lured Android users to sign in for premium SMS services.
As per a report, hundreds of apps that were a part of malicious campaigns were downloaded more than 10.5 million times. These fake apps were downloaded by users from over 80 countries with most downloaded by users in the Middle East, the US and Poland.
Older apps do not take advantage of changes in Android and iOS, new APIs, or new development methods that bring enhanced protection. As a result, older apps can have security flaws that newer apps don’t have.
Apple have also unveiled measures to deal with abandoned apps or apps that have not been updated in two years. Apple has some 650,000 apps like that.
