Bengaluru, NFAPost: Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) – operator of Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport), is seeking a partner to establish its electric bus shuttle operations between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Committed to employing sustainable and best global practices, BLR Airport will be using electric buses to transport passengers across the campus.
BIAL Chief Operating Officer Jayaraj Shanmugam said implementing green practices consistently has helped us fast-track our sustainability journey.
“The deployment of the EV shuttle service at terminal transfers reiterates our commitment to a green future and catering to the ever-increasing air transportation needs,” said BIAL Chief Operating Officer Jayaraj Shanmugam.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, BLR Airport will further decarbonise its airport operations and contribute to a more sustainable future. BIAL has undertaken various steps to deploy onsite renewable energy generation systems and offsite renewable power procurement.
Onsite solar installations and Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) from solar and wind energy suppliers helped BLR Airport achieve energy-neutral status since December 2020.
As a result of energy conservation, BLR Airport saved enough energy to power nearly 9,000 homes for a month. Additionally, the airport achieved a major milestone on its sustainability journey by becoming water positive, effectively meaning that BLR Airport treats and recycles more water than it consumes, despite requiring millions of litres of water daily for the maintenance of infrastructure and operations.
BIAL has also won several accolades for its sustainable practices. It has been recently awarded the prestigious PEER (Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal) Platinum certification by Green Building Certification Inc. (GBCI), the foremost authority on sustainability in building design, construction, and operations.
