New Delhi, NFAPost: Piyush Goyal, Textiles Minister has called for increasing handloom exports to Rs 10,000 crore and doubling the production to Rs 1.25 lakh crore in the next three years with a view to promoting the growth of the sector. In today’s time handloom exports are worth Rs 2,500 crore and production is about Rs 60,000 crore.
Addressing an event on the occasion of 7th National Handloom Day here today, PiyushGoyal said that nation is committed to ensure sustainable development of the handloom sector thereby empowering handloom weavers and workers financially and instilling pride in their exquisite craftsmanship.
“Let us today all resolve collectively on this day that we will go for a Rs 10,000 crore target for exports of handloom products and a target to increase our production to Rs 1.25 lakh crore in the next three years,” he said.
The minister announced that a Committee will be constituted consisting of all weavers, trainers equipment makers, marketing experts and other stakeholders to recommend ways and means to achieve the objective and improve all-round progress of the handloom sector.
He also suggested forming a team under the chairmanship of Sunil Sethi of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) consisting of weavers, trainers, equipment makers, marketing experts and other stakeholders to recommend ways and means to promote the growth of the sector.
The sector should become strong and prosper without depending much on state support, Goyal said. Textiles Secretary U P Singh at the event said the ministry is working on ways to ensure artisans and weavers get the right price for their products.
Congratulating NHDC for setting up three Handloom Craft Villages at Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala , Mohpara Village, District Golaghat, Assam and Kanihama, Budgam, Srinagar in collaboration with the respective State governments, the minister stated that it will not only provide additional attraction for the domestic and international tourists but also promote the well-known Handloom & Handicraft Products of the region leading to rise in weavers income.
Piyush Goyal and Darshana Jardosh jointly inaugurated Design Resource Centre at Kancheepuram, TamilNadu and building of Weavers’ Service Centre at Raigarh, Chhatisgarh on the occasion. Virtual Buyer Seller Meet was also organized by National Handloom Development Corporation.
On the clarion call of the Prime Minister, National level – “My Handloom My Pride Expo” is being organized at Dilli Haat, INA, New Delhi from 1st August to 15th August 2021 by National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) to celebrate the 7th National Handloom Day.
