Bengaluru, NFAPost: Google has been slapped a $5bn lawsuit as announced by a federal judge in California on Friday.
As Reuters reports, the lawsuit seeks at least $5bn in damages over allegations of tracking users’ activities in Chrome’s Incognito (aka Private) mode.
According to Bloomberg, Google had earlier appealed the court to overturn the case on grounds of invalidating the claims. The judge, however, had turned down the request.
It may be recalled that three users had earlier filed a class-action lawsuit against Google, alleging that its browser tracked user data even while logged in the Private mode.
The petitioners alleged that Google tools continued tracking and passing on the users’ personal data to the company even after they turned off data tracking in the browser. They further complained that the tech giant engages in a “pervasive data tracking business.”
A Google spokesperson, however, refuted these claims stating that the company has never stored any user-activity data on its servers when users browse in Incognito mode. He also added that some third-party websites may still use trackers and cookies in Private mode to collect user information.
