Elon Musk’s Starlink has promised to provide higher internet speed as it is testing its system upgrades.
Starlink is a low-earth satellite constellation that provides broadband internet connection to remotest places on the planet.
“You might see much higher download speeds on Starlink at times. Testing system upgrades,” he tweeted today.
Earlier, he had said that the internet speed of Starlink will double to 300Mbps this year and latency will drop to 20ms later this year, Musk said.
The tweets come in the wake of Musk’s plans to make a foray into the ever-growing Indian telecommunications industry with 100-Mbps satellite-based internet.
Musk had reportedly got in touch with the Union Government to consider allowing satellite-based broadband technologies to operate in the country.
SpaceX had stated that Starlink was eyeing the $1 trillion maritime and in-flight internet demand in Chinese and Indian markets.
Starlink aims to provide a cheaper web for millions in remote areas across the world.
At present, the company promises speeds between 50 to 150Mbps for the Starlink project that plans to deliver high-speed Internet through a network of about 12,000 satellites.
It has already launched over 1,000 of its Starlink satellites in orbit.
He said that the Starlink project will cover most of Earth by end of the year, all by next year, then “it’s about densifying coverage”.
“Important to note that cellular will always have the advantage in dense urban areas. Satellites are best for low to medium population density areas,” Musk added.
