Mumabi, NFAPost: With almost 71% of the urban population playing casual or professional games on smartphones, or other devices, India ranks among the top 10 gaming countries in the world, as per a recent study.
“When it comes to category of gamers, India is among the top 10 countries comprising of light to regular smartphone gamers- with 82% of its gaming population playing games on their smartphones up to 10 hours a week, and only 16% identified as heavy and intense gamers (playing more than 10 hrs a week),” according to a white paper released by UK-based market research firm YouGov.
The new trend is also supported by the release of new consoles and major titles launching across several different platforms. Besides these development, the COVID-19 pandemic really changed the gaming landscape in 2020 setting aside all precedents.
Even though blockbuster films, professional sports, and TV have been subject to disruption and delays, games like The Last of Us Part II and Animal Crossing have broken sales records. Despite low popularity of esports in India, compared to countries such as the US and UK, the esports industry has a bright future in India, YouGov said.
“Indians are more likely to embrace these competitions, once they know more about them, hinting at a bright future for esports in the country,” states the report.
Besides playing games, for a subsection of gamers, especially professionals watching video games online has become as much of a pastime as gaming itself.
The data shows YouTube Gaming is significantly more popular among gamers than any of its competitors in several markets, YouGov said.
